Job Description:
Under general supervision, the Parks Crew Leader is responsible for directing and assisting the parks maintenance team in their daily tasks to maintain city parks, athletic fields, facilities, and other municipal properties. The position requires ensuring safety, proper procedures, and high standards in park maintenance and beautification projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assists with the direction of affiliated personnel in the performance of assigned tasks ensuring that correct policies, procedures, and safety standards are maintained.
- Coordinates the maintenance and set up for special events and rentals.
- Oversees maintenance of athletic fields, parks and facilities meeting departmental standards.
- Coordinates tasks and assignments with the Parks Superintendent.
- Operates tractors, implements and equipment using a variety of power and hand tools.
- Assists with maintaining a sufficient inventory of supplies and materials for Parks Operations.
- Performs light carpentry, electrical, irrigation and/or plumbing duties as assigned.
- Supervises the work crews in the absence of the Parks Superintendent.
- Oversee the maintenance of athletic fields, parks, playgrounds, and facilities, including irrigation systems and landscaping.
- Coordinates the cleaning and maintenance of assigned city buildings and grounds.
- Assists in Emergency Management Operations as necessary.
- Direct and lead parks staff in assigned tasks, ensuring compliance with safety and city standards.
- Serves as essential emergency (nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call emergency) response personnel when required.
- Regular and prompt attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
- Perform inspections and coordinate repairs for playgrounds, vehicles, and equipment.
- Operate various landscaping equipment, such as mowers, tractors, and power tools.
- Provide training to staff on equipment operation, safety protocols, and job procedures.
- Coordinate with the Parks Superintendent to plan and execute maintenance schedules and special event setups.
- Apply fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides in compliance with safety standards.
- Perform light carpentry, electrical, irrigation, and plumbing work as needed.
- Supervise work crews, ensuring quality and efficiency, particularly in the absence of the Parks Superintendent.
- Ensure the proper maintenance of assigned buildings and grounds, including trash removal and equipment inspections.
- Assist with Emergency Management Operations and serve as essential emergency personnel when required.
- Maintain records of activities, inventory, and equipment maintenance schedules.
- Adhere to departmental and city policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Education: High School graduation or its equivalent plus at least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience with at least one (1) year of supervisory experience any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of: Turf preparation, turfgrass ecology, landscape management, irrigation systems, and proper use of landscaping tools and equipment. Arborist knowledge. Work Zone Traffic Control/Qualified Flagger, Backhoe/Front End Loader, and Management Short Course. Basic carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and irrigation system repairs. Knowledge of herbicide and pesticide application, safety protocols, and playground equipment standards. Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications.
- Skill/Ability to: the ability to work under general supervision, understand and follow instructions; operate and maintain a variety of power and hand tools; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions. Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate staff performance effectively. Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Safety/Physical Requirements: Heavy. Tasks involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, and using a force equal to ninety (90) pounds.
- Certifications & Licenses Required: Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License and must possess at least two of the following or obtain within 18 months of hire: Certified Pool Operator (CPO), Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI), and/or Sports Field Manager (SFM) certification, in addition to: Pesticide Applicator Certification (PA).
