VOLUNTEER APPLICATION PROCESS
  1. Applications (Accepted until end of business October 30th)
    • Applicants must fill out an application, found on the City of Boerne’s Website.
  2. Physical Agility Test (November 11th and 12th)
  3. Waiver
    • Must execute the standard waiver for all testing and participation.
  4. Oral Interviews (November 19th -21st)
  5. Volunteer Offer
    • Offers will be made November 30th
  6. Drug Testing and Physical
    • Volunteer Applicant will have to complete a physical and drug testing
  7. Candidate Orientation
    • December 19th
  8. Volunteer Academy
    • Classes begin Jan 5th @ 18:00hrs
    • Volunteer will have to attend to a 15 Week academy held on every other Tuesday evenings and one Saturday per month. Graduation will proceed after successful completion of SFFMA skills and written testing.
  9. Volunteer Probationary Period
    • Volunteers, after completion of the volunteer academy, will be assigned a task book to complete. This time frame is when the volunteer can first begin responding to emergencies.
CONDITIONS FOR SERVICE AS A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER
Volunteers are required to meet the following requirements:
  1. Station Hours-Annual
    • Members are required to log a minimum of 288 station hours per year.
    • Station hours can be from shifts performed at the Fire Station or coming in for emergencies as they arise.
  2. Meetings and Trainings
    • Meetings and Training are conducted on the first (1st) and third (3rd) Wednesdays of each month starting at 6 P.M.
    • Volunteers are required to make at least 50% of the meetings and training.
  3. Events
  • Volunteers participate in the Annual Fundraiser, July 4th 5K, Christmas Party/Awards, BergesFest Parade, Fair Parade, National Night Out and Fire Prevention Week/Month. Volunteers are encouraged to make 50% of the events. ​​​​​​
  • Volunteer Academy​​​​​​
    •   Volunteer must attend and graduate from the Volunteer Fire Academy
Candidate Physical Ability Test
Stair Climb Evolution:
  1. Attire: Candidate can wear tennis shoes. Candidate will also wear a 40-pound weighted vest.
  2. Activity: There will be a 20 second warm up period at 48 steps a minute (Level 5). After the warmup, the 3-minute interval starts at 60 steps a minute (Level 7).
Ground Evolutions:
  1. Attire: Ground evolutions will be completed by Candidate wearing a helmet, gloves, and a 40 lb. weight vest.
  2. Activities: Each of the following evolutions must be completed in a safe manner to advance:
    1. 5” Hose Drag 100 Ft – Candidate will drag a section of 5” hose 100’.
    2. Dummy Drag- Candidate will move a weighted manikin 50 ft.
    3. Simulated Tool Carry- Candidate will carry two 40lb dumbbells 100 ft without stopping or dropping the weight.
    4. Pike Pole Simulation- Candidate simulates pulling ceiling through full arm extensions and retraction of a 45# bar bell (to the floor) 10 times. Candidates will be given up to two warnings before disqualification.
    5. Keiser Sled- Candidate will strike the Keiser Sled with a sledgehammer and move it approximately 4 feet.
    6. Confined Space Crawl- Candidate will crawl through a confined space simulator.
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Assists in the control and extinguishing of fires, conduct search and rescue missions, respond to medical and fire emergencies, administer emergency medical treatment. Serves as essential emergency personnel as necessary. Attends trainings, events, and meetings as required by the Volunteer Fire Department. Attendance in the Volunteer Fire Academy is required. The volunteer position requires a high level of physical fitness, ongoing training and education, commitment of substantial time in service each month, as well a strong desire to serve our community.

EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES
  • Responds to fires, fire alarms, emergency medical calls and other emergency calls;
  •  Assists on rescue or rescue support functions at scenes requiring technical rescue, such as water/Swiftwater rescue, confined space rescue, trench rescue, vehicle extrication, vertical rescue, building collapse, or rescue from other types of entrapment;
  •  Assists with rescue and emergency care at hazardous materials scenes, disasters, mass casualty situations, or where weapons of mass destruction have been used or may be present, securing and containing the scene as necessary;
  •  Operate emergency medical and rescue equipment; providing life support care to ill and injured individuals, up to specific certified skill level;
  •  Performs fire suppression functions including rescue, deploy and operate hose lines, ventilate roofs, perform salvage work after fires, and other related tasks associated with fire suppression; to include structure, wildland and vehicle fires;
  •  Inspect, clean, and maintain apparatus, equipment, quarters, and grounds;
  •  Participates in fire and Basic EMS training classes and drills; and
  • Participate in Community events such as Kendal County Fair Parade, National night out and Dept fundraisers.
  • Serves as essential emergency personnel and must respond when required; 
  • Conduct station tours and other lectures/demonstrations; and
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
    Knowledge of: applicable traffic laws, medic-legal aspects for this position and clients’ rights; safety and security procedures to allow duties to be carried out in hostile environments; technical materials on fire suppression, rescue, EMS, hazardous materials and fire prevention; departmental policies and procedures;
   Skill/Ability to:  identify, secure and perform hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion while caring for critically ill and injured people; work in extreme temperature, inclement weather, intermittent exposure to dust, fumes and loud noise intensity; study maps to learn the district assigned as necessary; converse fluently in and read English; read, write and understand written and verbal instructions, reports, documents and plans; use of good judgment and coordinate safe and cooperative work environment; work effectively as a team member; maintain good working relationship with co-workers and supervisors; ability to respond to emergencies when not scheduled to volunteer. Be able to volunteer hours to include evening hours, weekends, and holidays; Must be able to make the time commitment this position requires; and  
   Safety/Physical Requirements:  ability to maintain physical condition for strenuous physical efforts including safely standing, walking, bending, crawling, kneeling, stooping in awkward positions; move/lifting heavy objects up to 100 lbs.  Climb ladders and work at considerable height while supported by ladders or ropes; work in close/confined spaces safely; wear/use self-contained breathing apparatus and/or air purifying respirators and other personal protective and chemical protective equipment as required; use and maintain safety equipment as required by departmental regulations.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Minimum 18 y/o old with a High School Diploma/GED
Preferred:
  • Texas DSHS EMT Certification
  • SSFMA, TCFP or equivalent training
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  •  Must not have any history of criminal or improper conduct, which may affect suitability for Fire/EMS work; Must not have been convicted, placed on deferred adjudication, probation or any type of court ordered supervision for any felony under the laws of Texas, and any other state or the United States;
  • All other arrests and convictions are evaluated on an individual basis based on the nature and gravity of the offense, time passed since the conviction and/or completion of sentence;
  • Any and all prior military service is required to have resulted in at least an under honorable conditions discharge; and
  • Must meet volunteer time requirements established by the Boerne Volunteer Fire Department.
